Hell's Rebels

Raise a Glass to Freedom

The birth of a revolution.

It was an overcast morning at Aria Park as the citizenry of Kintargo gathered to protest the recent actions of the new lord-mayor, Barzillai Thrune. Lord Aldo Mondragon, noted political satirist and demagogue, made his way to the front of the crowd and began an oration detailing his criticisms of Thrune and his proclamations. Maxwell, a member of the River Talons, blended into the crowd as he searched for his mentor Raymond, who was affiliated with the fledgling organization known as the Silver Ravens and had vanished after Thrune’s takeover.

Eventually, Thrune himself emerged. Sneeringly, he addressed the crowd, stating that he had heard their concerns and wished to respond by issuing an eighth proclamation, outlawing all non-native ships’ captains from setting foot in Kintargo. The crowd was extremely unhappy with this (riled in no small part by Mondragon’s mockery of the lord-mayor), and when an errant handful of manure was thrown into Thrune’s face, he fled inside the opera house and left his goons to deal with the ensuing riot.

Both Maxwell and Mondragon escaped the park, meeting up along the way when Maxwell fell from a tree and Mondragon helped him to his feet. They fled into nearby backstreets, where they happened upon a man being attacked by thugs from the nationalist Chelish Citizens’ Group. After the thugs were dispensed with, the injured man introduced himself as Rexus Victocora, sole survivor of the recently massacred Victocora noble house. The three took refuge in a nearby bookshop, where Rexus revealed that he was looking for people to stand up to Thrune’s tyranny. Mondragon agreed to join Rexus, revealing in the process that he was actually Corthos Tanessen, Rexus’ childhood friend. Maxwell decided to join in as well.

The group began by investigating the Fair Fortune Livery, which had been mentioned as a potential hideout of the Silver Ravens in a note from Rexus’ late mother Portia. After fighting their way through dire rats, grimple gremlins, and lemure devils, they uncovered three crates containing documents, equipment, and relics of the original Silver Ravens circa the Chelish Civil War. Rexus led the group to his mother’s friend Laria Longroad, owner of the Long Roads Coffeehouse. Laria was no stranger to rebellion, being the head of the Kintargo chapter of the the anti-slavery Bellflower Network, and she gave them a place to convene their nascent revolution – a warren of tunnels and caverns below the shop, which she had named the Wasp Nest.

Before they could go check out their new headquarters, the group decided to split up for a few hours and take care of personal business. Rexus decided to get started on decoding the Silver Ravens documents, which were written in a strange cipher that combined Celestial, Elven, and Strix. Maxwell headed back to the other River Talons and shared some of the wealth he had found in the livery, also sowing seeds of rebellion and Silver Raven sympathy among his fellow street rats. Corthos went straight to the Crooked Lion, where he gave Merry a pair of earrings he had acquired in the livery and spent a few hours with her. On his way out, he tried to once again ask Madame Charmaine how much it would cost to buy out Merry’s contract, but again she gave him no real answer.

Upon returning to the coffeehouse, Corthos and Maxwell descended into the Wasp Nest – Laria wanted them to make sure it was safe, since a smuggler friend of hers had vanished into it just a few days before. Rexus decided to stay upstairs and continue decoding the documents, since he wasn’t really a warrior. Corthos and Maxwell discovered the remains of the smuggler, partially eaten by an albino alligator that had taken up residence in the hideout’s lagoon. After dealing with the alligator, they also found that a group of tengu sisters were living in the Wasp Nest, and that their adopted dire corby sister had killed the smuggler and needed to be dealt with. Maxwell and Corthos dealt with the corby and arranged for the sisters to escape the city quietly and avoid attention.

With their headquarters secured and a small group of supporters already starting to be gathered, the Silver Ravens were officially reborn. Corthos would be their demagogue, arranging for public demonstrations of revolutionary support. Laria would serve as recruiter, bringing in new members of the organization. Maxwell would be their spymaster, keeping his ear to the ground and using his street rat skills to find out information about Thrune’s activities. Finally, Rexus would be their strategist, devising a plan of action. They quickly recruited two teams of supporters – a group of freedom fighters led by Isabelle Quint, and a band of rumormongers headed by Lena Farrowfall.
